Rep Power: 0 ![]() | 21 April 2007Beneficial Effects of Green Tea Over the past few years, we have heard a lot about green tea. Study after study shows beneficial effects of green tea are real. In our society, we eat too much, we consume the wrong foods, we work too many hours, and we take too little time for ourselves. To balance things out, many people are searching for a way to improve health that still fits in with a busy lifestyle. Green tea is an excellent option since it can be consumed as a liquid drink or used in baking and cooking. In this article, we wanted to address some of the top beneficial effects of green tea so you can see for yourself why all the fuss. This type of tea is highly rich in epigallocatechin gallate, otherwise known as EGCG, a powerful and effective antioxidant. This type of antioxidant has been studied in-depth with the results showing just how powerful it is. For starters, EGCG can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Even better, beneficial effects of green tea also confirm the prevention of cancer cells while not harming surrounding, healthy tissue. With cancer on the rise in this country, this news is truly remarkable. Another green tea benefit is the lowering of LDL cholesterol, also called “bad cholesterol”. Many of the foods we eat are loaded with saturated fat, which increases cholesterol levels that ultimately lead to heart attack and even stroke. Even more fascinating is that green tea beneficial effects include a study performed by the French. Most people know that French food, as good as it is, is loaded with fat. However, for some reason, French people are shown to have a much lower occurrence of heart disease than people living in the United States have. The reason is directly linked to the resveratrol in red wine. What makes this information so great is that EGCG found in green tea is 50% more powerful than resveratrol, thus reducing risk of heart disease in people who consume it. If you look at the Chinese and Japanese cultures, they have very few heart problems. The key is the consumption of green tea. However, the difference between Asian cultures and our own is that they steam the leaves rather than boil them. As a result, EGCG is not lost, making it far more effective. Therefore, to enjoy the beneficial effects of green tea, we suggest you purchase a steamer specifically designed for tea leaves. Other green tea beneficial effects include diet. Our country is in an obese epidemic with numbers on the rise. New evidence has been released showing that green tea taken or consumed daily helps curb the appetite, thus aiding with weight loss efforts. In fact, some of the current studies show that drinking green tea or using it in cooking helps burn far more calories than other forms of caffeine. Finally, beneficial effects of green tea connect with tooth decay. Cavities form from bacteria found in the mouth. Even frequent brushing and rinsing cannot eliminate all the harmful bacteria. However, green tea destroys bacteria, which causes plaque. As you can see, the beneficial effects of green tea address many of the health issues each of us face every day. To the answer “Where does green tea come from”, we need to break this down into where it is grown from a country standpoint and where it comes from, as far as a plant. Green tea has been proven time after time to be highly beneficial in the fight against cancer, along with many other serious diseases. With such a wide range of physical and mental health issues, we keep watching as green tea becomes more and more vital to our society. Although some controversy surrounds the number of countries currently growing the Camellia sinensis shrub, which produces the leaves for green, oolong, and black tea, most experts believe the number is between 40 and 50. However, the majority of green tea is grown in China, covering some 20 provinces. The four major areas however of where green tea comes from include: Jiangnan – Reaching the southern portion of the lower and middle Yangtze River, this area of China is one of the largest producers of green tea. Jiangbei – This area is to the north of the Yangtze River where green tea is harvested and produced into number of varieties. Lingnan – This area is comprised of Fujian, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Taiwan, all of them excellent for growing green tea. Southwest – Covered in this is Guizhou, Sichuan, Tibet, and Yunnan where both green and black tea is produced. As far as other countries and the question, “Where does green tea come from”, you will find that India, Australia, and Indonesia are other growers. As the demand for green tea has risen, so have the countries taking part in trying to keep up. Consumers around the world have discovered the delicious flavor, subtle aroma, and healing elements associated with green tea, thus boosting sales. Okay, so where does green tea come from as far as the plant? As mentioned, green tea grows on an evergreen type shrub, which needs to grow and mature for a full five years before the leaves are ready to be picked. Once the shrub reaches age 30, it is no longer capable of producing the prized leaves. Then, where does green tea come from goes even further to the type of fertilization used. For this tea to grow healthy and strong, various forms of organic fertilizer are used such as soya bean cakes. The tea gardens are carefully monitored and if any sign of a sick plant is seen, the plant is immediately removed and destroyed. You will also find that the season in which the leaves are picked is vital. In this case, harvesters will pick leaves in the springtime, during morning hours. As you can see, the answer to the question, “Where does green tea come from” is twofold. This shrub must be grown in regions where temperatures hover around 75 degrees and the soil is rich. Therefore, although we see a number of countries successfully growing green tea, there are limitations. The goal with any crop is to produce only the finest leaves for green tea that is high in nutrients. Julie Health writes about the health benefits of green tea at her website. Joshua Cancer and Green Tea, Green Tea Products No Comments » 14 March 2007Miracle Cup: The Health Benefits of Green Tea How do you fit a miracle in a cup? For 4,000 years, the Chinese people have been using green tea as treatment for everything from headaches to depression. Today, studies are conducted in Asia and the west in order to produce hard evidence of the health benefits of green tea. In the 1994 edition of the Journal of National Cancer Institute, the results of an epidemiological study stated that one of the health benefits of drinking green tea is that it can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by up to 60%. The rich presence of catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the reason why green tea has so much health benefits. A powerful antioxidant, EGCG can not only inhibit the growth of cancer cells but can also destroy them without harming healthy cells. The University of Purdue has also concluded a research on how a certain compound present in green tea can stop cancer cells from growing. Still another health benefit of green tea is its ability to lower down cholesterol levels and improve the ratio between good (HDL) cholesterol and bad (LDL) cholesterol. The EGCG in green tea is a health benefit substance that can lower down LDL cholesterol levels and stop blood from forming abnormal clots (thrombosis), a leading cause of heart attacks and strokes. Green tea has more health benefits compared to other Chinese teas like oolong and black tea, all of which come from the plant Camellia sinensis. What makes green tea different is the process by which it is made. Green tea owes much of its health benefits to how the Camellia sinensis leaves are steamed. The steam process keeps the EGCG health benefit of green tea from oxidizing. With oolong and black teas, however, the leaves are fermented instead of being steamed, thus causing the EGCG health benefit to transform into another less medicinally potent form. Aside from medicinal value, green tea can also offer other health benefits, especially in the fitness field. Drinking green tea can cause a person to burn down more calories. A recent study on the health benefits of green tea shows that the drink can help dieters. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1999, men who take both caffeine and green tea burn down more calories than men who only take caffeine or a placebo. Another health benefit of green tea is its bacteria-destroying properties. The health benefit of green tea in this area is that it can help prevent food poisoning and also prevent tooth decay. The substances found in green tea kill the bacteria causing food poisoning and those that cause dental plaque to form. Well known for its countless medicinal and health benefits, green tea is nothing short of a miracle. Julie Health writes about the health benefits of green tea at her website. One of the combinations of green tea that is available is Japanese green tea. If you are considering a variation of teas, this will definitely be one to put on your grocery list for health. Japanese green tea is also known as Ocha. It became a popular beverage in Japan about 1,200 years ago, mostly known for the health benefits that it offered. It became so popular so quickly, that is was soon a regular custom after every meal to drink the Japanese green tea. From the basics of this type of tea, there was an expansion into variations that the tea offered. The major difference between the teas of this culture to others is that it contains very little caffeine. This is mostly because of the ability for a different variety of tea leaves to come from the area. Because of this, several prefer this type of green tea to others that are available in the market. Another difference with this green tea is that it is processed differently than other types of teas. After the green tea leaves are grown, they will all be steamed first, then dried and rolled. From here, they will be blended into a mixture to make the tea. There are three major types of teas that will be used with this process, all which will create a various flavor. The first known leaf is the Gyokuro. This green tea leaf will produce a sweeter flavor than other green teas, and is the dominant type of leaf used in most green teas. Maccha is the second type of green tea, and differs from the other because it is processed into a powder. Maccha will be used more for tea ceremonies than for regular drinking because of the process it goes through. The third major type of green tea is Houjicha. This tea differs from the others because the leaves are roasted instead of steamed, allowing for a different type of taste. If you want to experience the varieties a culture can produce, then looking into the Japanese green tea and the different processes that create flavor is a place to begin. This will give you a different and enriching tea experience, which can help your taste buds to find the best tea fit for you. For centuries Europeans have been drinking tea and for millennia Asians have been drinking green tea. The main producers and exporters of green tea throughout the world include China, Argentina, Japan, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Tanzania. Green tea is available in many flavors, one of which is green chai tea. Many wonder what the fad about green chai tea is. Basically the original green tea from eastern countries has nothing to do with green chai tea. Western marketing firms created it in the 21st century. The word chai originated in the first place when the tea was different from the original green tea from India. Westernized Chai In several languages “chai” means tea and started in the Indian language. Chimney, chai, masala chai, milk chai and several others are the most famous chais in India. India is actually the origin of the original green chai tea, where it was typically served at houses and chai stops all over the country without milk. The addition of honey and sugar can enhance this particular green chai tea. For inspiration many western companies probably looked to this tea and decided to commercialize green teas because of their popularity. Soon they were added to the roster of products sold in western countries like the United States. Green chai tea is now famous everywhere in the western world and is an alternative to coffee for many people who want a healthy drink that will help keep them fit without have to go to the east. Single-serve and ready to drink tea lattes are the most common forms. Day by day the green chai tea industry is growing strong as time goes by. This is because people are becoming more concerned with their food intake and health. They find that green tea derivatives fit the bill since they burn their fat or cholesterol and help boost their energy levels. Kashmir green chai tea, spicy tea latte, organic green chai tea are just a few of the various flavors that green chai tea comes in. They are very high in antioxidants just like the original teas and are extremely useful to the bodies immune systems. Traditionally, green tea will have this as one of the major elements. However, some who are sensitive to caffeine may react negatively to this part of the mixture. If you aren’t sure about the caffeine in green tea, you should make sure that you know how important this side effect is. Caffeine is found in most green teas. It is part of the natural mixture that gives the tea an extra kick. With some, it means that they can’t drink the tea because of the hyperactivity, tension and insomnia it might cause. However, you may still want to benefit from the various other parts of green tea. If you aren’t sure how to turn your cup, you can find compromises that will help you to benefit without the caffeine. The first consideration to make with this particular element is how much caffeine is in green tea. Typically, the caffeine is at a much lower percentage than other types of beverages. For example, an average coffee will have about 200 milligrams of caffeine. Green tea will have about 30 milligrams. This is a large difference for most, and may allow the caffeine aspect to not be as effective to you. If you are very sensitive to caffeine, however, you can still find a solution. Several types of green tea come without the caffeine. You can find these in several places. You will simply need to look at the different components that are making up the entire mixture. For example, many of the Japanese green teas will not use caffeine at all in order to get the taste that they want. This may help you in deciding whether you can drink green tea or not. If you can’t find a specific green tea without caffeine, you can always look into supplements or extracts that are made up of pure green tea. Most often, these types of green teas will not have the extra caffeine in them, making it easier for you to handle is it moves through your body, giving you the benefits of the tea without having to add in the extra boost of energy. If you want to reap of the benefits of green tea, but know that you can’t have the caffeine, why not look into other possibilities? Joshua Health Benefits of Green Tea, Healthier Living Ideas No Comments » 29 January 2007Antioxidant Effects of Green Tea Through the process of oxidation, oxygen starts the process of burning glucose and fat to provide heat and energy in the body. Although this is an inevitable and naturally occurring process which gives our bodies the energy we need; the process of oxidation creates some by-products that have negative effects to our body. During the process of oxidation, highly reactive by-products called free radicals are produced. These free radicals act on other molecules, turning them into free radicals like themselves, thus disrupting their normal functioning. This could eventually lead to massive cell destruction, tissue damage, and even cause degenerative diseases, like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis among others. Oxygen damage to your cells results when there are too many free radicals present inside the body. Researchers conclude that such damage may be partly responsible for the effects of aging and certain diseases. There are certain substances in food which may play a role in protecting against this damage. Luckily, the human body comes prepared with natural defenses against these harmful free radicals. Antioxidants are chemical substances found naturally in fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants act on free radicals, pursuing them and neutralizing them in order to stop their damage on healthy cells of the body. What are the antioxidant effects of plants? Among the many plants that have disease-fighting antioxidants is the camellia sinensis, otherwise known as the tea plant. For centuries, tea has been served in Asian households as a healthy drink to promote health and general well-being. Green tea especially has been greatly favored due its many amazing health benefits. For centuries, green tea has been consumed throughout the ages in Asia. In traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, green tea has been used as a stimulant, diuretic (to promote the excretion of urine), astringent (to control bleeding and help heal wounds), and to improve heart health. The benefits of green tea have been largely attributed to the presence of polycatechins which have potent antioxidant effects. However, besides polycatechins, there are also other ingredients in green tea that contribute to its antioxidant effects. What are the antioxidant effects found in green tea? Among all flavonoids, catechin is ranked high for its antioxidant effects and properties. Catechin is that substance in green tea which makes the beverage an excellent source of antioxidant effects. Besides tannin, vitamins such as vitamin A (carotene), C, and E, there are also other well-known substances in green tea that gives it its antioxidant effects. Research aimed at finding the active compounds in green tea revealed that its defensive and antioxidant effects are mainly due to catechins which are powerful polyphenolic antioxidants. Green tea also has antioxidant effects that make them powerful anti-carcinogenic, cardioprotective, nueroprotective, and anti-microbial actions. A mostly bioactive catechin called epigallocatechin gallate has been singled out by many researchers as very important because of its antioxidant effects leading to cancer prevention. It is therefore a good idea to drink tea for its antioxidants effects. A constant intake of antioxidants from our diet can protect against damages to our body cells which occur following oxidation. Have more cups of green tea per day and benefit from its antioxidant effects. |
