Heart rate monitors

I've been thinking of getting a heart rate monitor since I've been running so much. Does anybody know of a good brand?

I picked up running that last ~year or so after my injury and really love it - it's amazing how in-shape you think you can be from lifting weights only to find out how quickly you get winded running :) at least for me....

Anyways, I think Polar is pretty much the main brand - I currently have THIS one which is a pretty basic heart rate monitor, it can do a few extra features but to be honest I don't use them. I'd like to get THIS one, which has GPS on it as well.

Another nice thing about it is it works with a lot of the major brand treadmills so you don't even have to use your wristwatch.

Does the strap take long to get used to?

It's not TOO bad, I didn't like it at first, but I don't notice it anymore - I actually run my headphone wire under it as well so it's not bouncing everywhere so I actually kind of like it for that reason

I also just started running about a year ago. I looked like I was in shape, but that wasn't really the case.

Why would you need a GPS for running on a treadmill?

I'm got a pretty good one on my stationary bike so i'm set there. I just ordered the Nike Plus kit off of amazon and I think it has a calorie counter but no heart rate monitor.
