Ventral Hernia

I found out yesterday that I have a ventral hernia between my breast bone and navel. It's large, about 3 or 4 inches long. They say there's no chance of strangualtion becasue its so large. I guess thats something.

I also found out this morning that my older brother has had the same thing for as long as he can remember. He didn't know what it was and has never had it diagnosed or repaired. He does crunches all the time and says that other than looking strange its caused him no problems. Is just leaving it alone an option?

If I have it repaired does this shut me down from doing ab work.

Re: Ventral Hernia

Just an update on this. On second opinion from my regular GP what I have is not a ventral hernia but Diastasis Recti. The abdominus rectus muscle is separated. But, he says that there is no risk of strangulation and advised me to carry on with my full workout routine unless it created some pain. :)

He also advised that I could have it repaired just like a ventral hernia but that it was not necessary. And that it was major surgery with a relatively high rate of complications and recurrence. So, no knife for me.

I started back doing about 200 crunches, of various types, each morning and no problems so far. Just a little weird looking when I'm actually doing a crunch! lol

Re: Ventral Hernia

Very good question my bruhtuh!

The first guy was a doc at a walk in clinic. Get ya any pill ya want that fella! Once he decided I was right about the hernia, and this is the kicker, He said, and I quote, "Do ya know any good surgeons?". I explained that maybe that's what I was there for since he was more a member of that club than I!

The second guy was my regualr GP that I've known for about 15 years. It takes for ever to get an appt. but he's well worth the wait. Deal is, when I discovered this 4"x1" lump comming from my gut I was kind of in a hurry to get any opinion! LOL Wasted $$$$!
