Signs & symptoms of allergic reactions: the basics

I’m sure many of you know this stuff, but in case there are some of you out there who don’t know, or are unsure, I wrote up a quick posting regarding some basic signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, and what you can do about it (and what you may be able to do for someone else).

Allergic reactions can manifest in numerous ways, from extremely mild, almost undetectable symptoms, to full-blown anaphylactic shock, which can rapidly progress to death if medical intervention is delayed. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should seek the advice of your physician (assuming symptoms are extremely mild), go to the emergency department (provided you are able to get yourself there safely), or, if symptoms appear serious and/or are progressing, call 911/have someone call for you/or if absolutely necessary, have them take you to emergency.

The most common mild reactions include, but certainly not limited to, rashes, itching, and the appearance of hives, especially around the face and neck.

The most common severe reactions include, but again not limited to, respiratory distress (usually first noticed as feeling short of breath and wheezing), difficulty swallowing, noticeable & rapid swelling of the face/eyes/tongue, chest discomforts, and a feeling of doom/anxiety/panic.

Pillows should not be used under the head if there are breathing/swallowing difficulties, or if these symptoms appear to be imminent. The same can be said regarding not giving anything orally to anyone. NB: If you are alone and waiting for help, and are not experiencing breathing or swallowing difficulties, taking a Benadryl, if available, should help ease the symptoms.

For mild reactions, antihistamines can be given; reassurance should be given as people often panic in severe reactions, and watch for signs of increasing distress. Severe reactions, such as in anaphylaxis, may call for such extreme measures as CPR until help arrives. Elevating the feet will help, but use caution if unsure about neck injury.

People with asthma seem to have a greater propensity to suffer from bronchospasm in regards to allergic reactions, hence increased likelihood of respiratory distress.

I’ll end with a couple of important notes: anyone with a history of allergy to sulfa drugs (anti-bacterials) should be aware that there is a high correlation of cross-sensitivity to Lasix & HCTZ (more so with Lasix). Three of the most common culprits for inducing allergic reactions are analgesics, ACE inhibitors (to lower BP) and antibiotics.

The above is in no way an all-inclusive list of meds, symptoms or treatments, but gives a good base to start with for those who may be wondering…….

Nice Post NN - remember folks this is nothing to take lightly. Take some benedryl ( every home should have some - it's the wonderdrug ) and head to the ER if you are having trouble breathing

Boy Oh Boy,do I know about allergies.I've lived with this my whole life.It seems every year or two I acquire a new one.Recently I had an attack after putting a banana in my protien shake. After eating and loving bananas my whole life, this was taken away from me also. The list is becoming endless.Potato's and tomato's made the list in recent years. Why couldn't it have been tuna for christ sakes!!!!!!!!!
If I live long enough,I doubt I'll have much of a menu choice in my golden years.I can see it now...fucking tuna and rice....yummy!!!!

It certainly isn't uncommon to develop a sensitivity to something that you've enjoyed/taken for years.........oh, oh, I'm certain one can develop sensitivities to certain forms of protein.......
