Not a medical question, but an employment question.

I'm considering going back to college for Information Technology. I wanted to ask you about also considering becoming an RN.

A few years back I started nursing school, but had to leave due to financial reasons. At the same time I was employed as a Nurse Assistant.
I have a good idea of what a nurse goes through.

What is your opinion about choosing a Nurse career over a Computer career?

Thanks.

Nursing will continue to grow ( salary wise and Job opportunity wise ) for the next 40 years as the Baby Boomers live longer and their is more chronic illness to take care of - after that I'm not sure but until then it's like money in the bank Acute Care RN's here in Cali are making approx 45 an hour with just a few years experience and even more in the Bay Area etc
Nursing is the way to go - target rich environment too :bigok: as the estrogen levels are definately higher than testosterone - ladies everywhere :)

PL,
I agree with you on the environment situation. LOL

As far as jobs, there will always be a serious need for RN's. My problem is do I go to a two year nursing school and go to work right out of school or try for the 4+ years to get a Master's in IT.
I'm leaning towards nursing, like powerlifrer said, there are jobs all over the country.

Do they travel out of state or just in their home state?

I worked a contract while in my same city a few years ago and since they didn't have to pay for an apartment , utilities etc - they have to pay a per diem to you equal to what they would have paid and the money is all tax free - paid my mortgage for months....aww the wonderful world of supply and demand...LOL

But we had a shitload of RN's from Alabama or Louisnana and Mississippi where they make $16 an hour - they come out here and work like maniacs - gobbling up all the OT they can - one guy told me that he made $ 117,000 ( 6 twelve hour shifts a week for a year - took a three week break once during the year to fly home) after taxes and bought a 160 acre farm with house barn stable etc outright

That is incredible, I actually loved it when I worked in a hospital. I wish I would have been able to continue my schooling.
I have to go back, it's driving me nuts. I'm single and would have no problem travelling like that.

Thanks powerlifter.
