High blood pressure

Hello great to join this forum.
I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure ( initially four weeks a go it was 193/110 but as of today is around 160/100 ) and I am due to start medication ( Lisinopril ) at 10 mg daily. I was also initially informed that my kidney function had dropped to around sixty percent but that also has marginally improved. I have for the last few weeks ceased training and taking any supplements ( Creatine, high levels of protein etc ) but I am very anxious to resume working out again. Can you workout whilst on these meds? Will I have to lower my intensity levels while training?

Thanks for your time

Re: High blood pressure

I'm worried that your MD only has you on an ACE inhibitor ( and not even that great a dose ) with BP like that. That will not produce the desired effect IMO. As for working out you can but I would watch how much protein I ate and keep an eye on your kidney function. 60 % is tremendously low for someone who is otherwise healthy. Those of us that have been here for a while remember Mass with Class and his kidney problems. We lost a real good Bro. You only have one pair of kidneys - protect them.

You need to forget about gear, supplements and lifting right now, especially with the degree of hypertension that you have. How effective has the lisinopril been on your blood pressure? Usually ACE inhibitors such as lisinopril are a first line defense for hypertension. After using it, we often move on to other classes of drugs called calcium channel blockers, Beta Blockers and diuretics. The problem with you blood pressure is that it usually idicates a problem elsewhere in the body. Your body doesnt produce a high blood pressure for no reason. In your case you mentioned that you kidney function is at 60%. Have you ever been told that you have renal stenosis which is basically a blockage of the blood supply to your kidneys? The body tries to compensate for decreased blood flow to the kidneys, brain, ect by "turing" the pressure up and up until it can perfuse (get blood flow to) what ever organ is effected. Do you have any labs from your doctor regarding kidney values such as a BUN and/or Creatinine?
