high blood pressure

Hey, Naughty Nurse, my BP was 144/100. Went to doc to see what could be done. He put me on Ziac. That was a little over a week ago. Bp has gone down a little. Does this preclude me from doing steroids? An online doc put me on Test cyp 200mg for andropause. I haven't told the other doc about that. I'm 60 years old,5'10", 220lbs. Im on a clean diet (4-5 meals a day), lift weights 4 times a week, try to do lots of cardio. What else can I do?

I personally would let your current doc that prescribed the Ziac know that another doctor has diagnosed you with andropause or at least suspects that you have it just because some of the primary effects of andropause are and increase in both the risk of Cardiovascular problems/events as well as atherosclerosis which could be causing some of the mild hypertension. What is you blood pressure running now? Your systolic pressure (the top number 144) isnt bad for someone in their 60's, but the bottom number (diastolic pressure) is a little high. Normally we dont like to see this much over 90. The top number basically indicates how hard the heart is having to work to overcome the ejection of the blood it is pumping out. This number can go up or down depending on several factors such as atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), and increase in overall fluid volume in the cardiovascular system such as that related to water retention with steriods, or and increase in the thickness of the blood which makes it harder for the heart to pump. The bottom number basically measures how the heart is resting, and subsequently is the minimum pressure that the heart is exposed to. It will increase with some of the reasons I listed above, so as you can guess you dont want your heart under a lot of stress when it is supposed to be resting. You could probably go ahead with a mild cycle and just monitor your bp often while on (every 4-8 hours or so) just to be on the safe side. You might try to have some sort of a loop diuretic on hand just in case you run into a water/fluid retention problem. You definately want a diuretic that is potassium sparring though, such as Spironolactone (Aldactone). Many people use Lasix in bodybuilding, but I dont really recommend it since it can and will deplete your body of the vital potassium that you need for proper heart function. Based on the limited info that you gave, it sounds like you are eating and exercising well. We dont really know your past medical history, labs, tests, ect. Possibly give us a little history and some current stats and we can gather a better assesment.

I'm not Naughty Nurse but will try and answer your question.
1) if you are on HRT you should let your other doctor know about it. As long as it is by prescription there shouldn't be a problem.
2)Ziac or hydrochlorthiazide ( HCTZ for short ) is safe to use in conjunction with HRT
3) you didn't state whether you were on any other meds or the dose of ziac you were on.

Thanks for your answers, JoeyZ and Powerlifter('Lifter, I REALLY like your avatar. Is that your spouse or girlfriend? WOW!) However I digress. To answer your questions about other meds, I seem to be a walking pharmacy. Ziac is a generic containing HCTZ 6.25mg and Bisoprolol 5mg, Lipitor 20mg, Prevacid 30mg, allegra 60mg, Flomax0.4 mg, cialis 20mg. As you can see by my meds, I have all the old guy problems. You youngsters have a lot to look forward to. Yeah, the HRT is by prescription. It's good to know Ziac is safe to use. THe BP was on the rise before I started HRT, but didn't think it was a problem. My last blood test my PSA was 2.7. I hop ths answers your question. Thanks again. I knew I came to the right place for info.

You sound good to go - just keep checking your BP and remember that HCTZ spills potassium from your system so supplement with K + rich foods or use a supplement tab - and no , as much as I love my wife, she is not my avatar.

Were you drinking any caffeine before your pressure test? I went to the doctor once right before i was gonna hit the gym. I popped 2 caffeine tabs and 2 ephedrine tabs before i went to the doctors so my blood pressure was 150 over 100 and my resting heartrate was 110 a minute lol. They weren't gonna let me leave. Seasonedvet, do you eat many high glycmic carbs? Doing low glycemic carbs or the atkins type diet should regulate your BP IMO. But hey, i'm just some dumb bodybuilder!

I agree with you, I would be more inclined to believe that it has nothing to do with the HRT, which probably isnt what you want to hear. I did a cross reference of all the drug combinations that you are on just out of habit and here are the results:

1.Bisoprolol has a (MILD) possible adverse reaction with Flomax causing possible hypotensive response, lol.........which obviously isnt happening here.

2.ZIAC has a (MODERATE) possible adverse reaction with Flomax causing the same as above. So just for future reference in case you have any problems with Hypotension you can consider this.

You are definately on some meds that SHOULD be lowering your BP. I would say that if it doesnt stay lowered after a few I would talk to your prescribing doc about changing to some different meds that your body responds to better. It is a pretty common occurence to need med adjustment to find the right one that your body responds to.
