Rep Power: 6 ![]() | Folliculitis, Bug Bite, or What? Big Man has this large red and inflammed spot on his calf. He noticed it last night and it was about 1 inch in diameter. Now it is about 4 inches in diameter. It has a small puss filled center, is very itchy, hurts when pressed against, and is warm to the touch. At first we thought it was a spider bite but now that I look at it, it doesn't seem to have any entry marks. The center has a pus filled head about the size of a pen point. It looks similar to an ingrown hair so that is why we both think that may be what it is. Is it possible that this is folliculitis that turned into a boil overnight? I tried to find some info on it and he seemed to have many of the symptoms, but what do you guys think? I'm trying to get him to go to the doctor in the morning, but he is a man and all men are STUBBORN! Anyway, most of the home treatments I've seen say a warm compress several times a day. What else can we do? Should we try to drain it ourselves or leave it alone and see if it breaks open on its own? Could it possibly be anything else? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!!! |

Rep Power: 6 ![]() | I've had a couple of those.....by the description, turned out to be an ingrown hair, and it just doesn't get discovered until it's large. Straight off, I can't think of anything else it could be except maybe a bite....as I don't think ingrown hairs should itch. You really shouldn't, but I do it myself, drain it.....just be extremely careful with sterile equipment. Warm compresses. Keep an eye on it...if it keeps getting bigger, or more inflammed, fever, etc., he will likely need antibiotics.

Rep Power: 10 ![]() | A spider bite will usually have striations comming out of it..........that doesnt mean that its not a spider bite or some type of bite. I have had these a few times and lanced it, put antibiotic ointment on it and let it go and it healed fine. Does he have a fever or anything else?
