Fighting After Neck Surgery

Just curious as to opinions on fighting after disc replacement and fusion at the C5-6 area of the neck.
Does it heal up strong enough to be able to continue to spar and fight?

Re: Fighting After Neck Surgery

I bet your doc would say hell no. I have a fucked up neck too. From my C2-C6 and I'm also opting for surgery. I wrestle right now in college and fight mma as well. my doctor thinks I'm retarded and keeps telling me no more fighting or wrestling, he said that and football are the worst you can do. Also no lifting!!! So basically all I love I can't do. You've had surgery so you're probably worse off than me in terms of playing the way we want. Was your surgery a success though? Not sure if i'll keep doing the pt, chiro and MT or get a cortisone shot or surgery.... keep us posted bro, I'd like to know as well - I'm betting a doctor would definately rule out your fighting

Re: Fighting After Neck Surgery

I have a constant pain in my neck and right shoulder. Heavy over the head lifting is out. I don't mess with it at all. My doc said he wouldn't advise that I fight, but I need to do something.
Just my opinion, don't get the cortisone shots. Stick with the PT and chiropractor if it is helping.
I was at the point a therapist wouldn't touch my neck. He was afraid of causing further damage. So after talking to a couple of docs I went with the surgery.
Just so it doesn't sound like I am in the ring. I spar, no matches. It is a lot of strikes, kicking, and me getting hit.:)

Re: Fighting After Neck Surgery

Guys remember you have only one set of discs - once they are jacked you are too - I know too many Bros that foughyt through disc pain and are now F-d up guys in their 40's. I'm talking guys that were deadlifting 800lbs in the 80's as young men. Please be cautious. I'm not saying be a pussy but you have only one back/neck. Nothing is as dehabilitating as neck/back pain.

Re: Fighting After Neck Surgery

And I love squats but they're havoc on your spine as well!!! I can't deal without powerlifting. I don't want to cut up. but, you just have to stay smart! It definately sucks though

Re: Fighting After Neck Surgery

I would definately advise against it. I use to box and I can imagine training for that after my back surgery. A fusion is especially worrisome.

Re: Fighting After Neck Surgery

I have taken some good shots, everything seems okay so far. I have had my neck x-rayed to make sure it is all still fine. So far, so good. My trainers know about the injury and make sure I don't do anything that would mess me up.
