Lightbulb Re: The 8th grade in 1910

I'm afraid the present education system has been dumbed down considerably. What is our Dept of Education doing?

To pass the 8th grade in 1910 in the state of Washington you would have had to:

Re: The 8th grade in 1910

wow...the only reason i know most of those is from college...not 8th grade.

consider this - US History isn't even taught until 11th grade, at least where i went to school...and it was a joke. The only reason i learned anything about it was because i took it as an AP course.

Re: The 8th grade in 1910

i dont know about the rest of the country, but here in florida, all teaching is taught so the kids can pass the standardized FCAT testing each year....basically the kids are just taught how to pass the test, not to really learn or think.....in public school, here, i have always felt my kids needed to be in honors classes (even if some of them are a bit tough) to LEARN as much as possible...

geeeeesh i love the physiology (anatomy?) questions...the thoracic duct, i think i only learned where that is thru my self education of the human body--- i bet there are many in the medical field who dont know where that is these days...

of course back then there were so many fewer students in class....so much less problems with external environment (divorces, single working moms, etc) less kids with emotional problems, less kids with chemical problems, etc....making it much easier to teach....

i think teachers are still awesome, its just conditions that are so tough....

i certainly wouldn't go that far.

but i agree with you wanting to keep your kids in honors classes...i took nothing but honors and AP classes throughout HS. it's the best way to go...some kids complain that you do more work, but it's not true...it's just a higher standard of work - not necessarily longer hours studying, etc.

Re: The 8th grade in 1910

Well speaking from someone who currently has 33, 37, and 36 students in three different classes, the quality of education has diminished a lot since 1910. We over fill classes and expect teachers to reach unubtainable goals. We teach toward standarized tests, and don't ever really teach skills. I teach in a high school and we have kids who don't care enough to challenge themselves to do better then the next. I have to make sure all of my lesson plans are at a sixth grade reading level because many of my students can barely read. There is lack of support from the community, barely any money, and most of the teachers I've met are still there not because they're making enough money to live but because they are afraid to leave because of what may happen to their students. If I ever hear another person tell me I'm going to have an easy career because I have my summers and weekends off I'll slap them into next week. Cause my weekends are spent preparing for the next week and my summers are spent doing odd jobs to pay the bills for the rest of the year!
