| Senior Member ![]() | I'm going to need some advice on this as I just ordered a Conroe as part of my rig upgrade. I really have no idea where to start. I'm hoping the Conroe is cool enough to overclock a bit on it's stock fan.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157092 with 1G of PC2-4300... I really just want to know how much I can overclock with what I've got. I already spent more on it than I wanted to. If I can get it to 2.4-2.6 I will be happy. :) I'm counting on the new energy saving technologies to keep the temp down.

I read that the E6300 has some kind of lock but there is someway around it. How do you open up CPUs that they try to prevent you from overclocking? I think I will be happy just getting it over the E6400 clock-speed at this point.

On a side note, the reason most systems crash when you overclock is because it doesn't have enough juice to operate properly (assuming you have proper cooling). When you up the FSB or the multiplier, you normally have to increase the voltage to the CPU and/or RAM to run stable. However, with the newer technology, this isn't required until you really start to overclock WAY beyond the chips potential, as they are very efficient with power and the stock power going to them is usually more than enough for even a major overclock. To sum it up, even though your cheap motherboard doesn't allow you to change your voltage to the CPU/RAM you should be fine to at least 2.6-2.8ghz, with no hiccups at all, and will blow away a stock E6400. | |
