more CPU help please

okay, my pops iis gonna be cool and get me a new burner.. so what i need to know is how can i save windows2000 to a disk.. i'm gonna be saving my mp3's and my videos to disk (easy) then formating my HD.

if this seems like a bad idea then let me know.. its either this or 1- buy a new computer (no money for that though) 2- take it somewhere and have them do it for me (again no money)

i need all the help i can get.. again.

Fuck this riv. Trying to save win 2000 on disc? Holy crap, what a pain in the ass. Its copyrighted (the real deal) and never rights correctly. There is an extensive "special" process for doing this and man---I'm telling you---it aint worth it. xp is much more stable IMO (it seems to do better with games etc).

Unless your talking about a "startup disc." In that case for win 2000 there are actually something like 7 discs that (floppy) you will need. But if you are talking the whole program---forget it.

And, even if you could get this to write, and install thereafter, I can obsolutely say that it wouldnt install correctly and would miss critical files that would cause you crashes later.

What I would do is make the 7 or whatever discs (startup) that you need. Wipe HD. Then partially install win 2000 from startups. Then buy xp upgrade (cheaper). Then install xp upgrade. The upgrade will look for ntdlr files that are contained on the startup discs.

Just my imho.

What I think you're describing is a process we call "ghosting" your hard drive. You want everything intact right? So you can just reinstall it on your new system? You will need an external hard drive (usb type, however big it needs to be) and they're pretty reasonably priced. The second thing you'll need is some type of "Ghost" software. It'll copy everything from your current machine onto the external drive. Then, you plug the external drive into the new system, and follow the instructions. Basically, it'll format your new computer just how the old one was. This process was very successful in making the majority of NASA's computers look exactly alike (except for the Macs). This should give you some direction..

I forgot about ghosting. BB is right on target. Your gonna need like 15 discs (cdr). I did this once a long time ago (you dont need an external drive).

Whats the point in backing up your whole hard drive just to save some of your data? I'd reformat that bitch and only burn the things you want to save to the cd's. If anything you should ghost right after you re-install windows and get all your programs on, but before you go out searching for kiddie porn, then you'll have a nice clean OS to re-load any time you want.

I thought he wanted W2K back on his system? Does he still have the disks? You'll also need the program disks for whatever you want to load.
